Using Cigna for therapy

Cigna offers commercial mental-health coverage across its full plan range, including OAP (Open Access Plus), PPO, EPO, and the Cigna Behavioral Health network specifically for mental-health services. Federal parity rules require Cigna to cover outpatient therapy at terms comparable to medical care. In practice this means most plans cover individual therapy with an in-network provider for a copay (often $25-$50) or coinsurance after deductible.

Cigna runs its mental-health network through Evernorth Behavioral Health (formerly Cigna Behavioral). The therapists in this directory who accept Cigna are credentialed with Evernorth, and your card may have a separate phone number or member portal for behavioral health benefits. That's normal and doesn't affect coverage. Most Cigna plans no longer require a primary-care referral for outpatient mental-health, though a small number of HMO products still do.

Telehealth is reimbursed at the same rate as in-person on Cigna's commercial plans. Session limits are uncommon; if your plan has a limit it's usually 20 or 30 sessions per year, and your therapist's billing team can request additional sessions if clinically warranted.

What to check before your first session: confirm with Cigna (or look in your member portal) that outpatient mental-health is covered on your specific plan, your copay or coinsurance amount, and whether your deductible has been met for the year. If that's not how you want to spend an evening, our intake coordinator can do the verification with the therapist's billing team.

For out-of-network Cigna coverage: most commercial Cigna plans offer partial out-of-network benefits — typically 50 to 70 percent after an out-of-network deductible. You'd pay the therapist up front and submit a superbill. Whether this beats in-network depends on the specific plan; for some, the difference is small enough that you should pick the therapist who actually fits.
