Using Humana for therapy
Humana provides commercial, Medicare Advantage, and Medicaid coverage with a stronger presence in Medicare than in commercial markets. The mental-health network varies significantly by region and by product. If you're using a Humana Medicare Advantage plan, your behavioral-health benefits typically run through Humana Behavioral Health; commercial plans similarly are administered internally.
Federal parity rules require Humana to cover outpatient mental-health at terms comparable to medical care. Most plans cover individual therapy with an in-network provider for a copay (typically $25-$50 for commercial; $0-$40 for Medicare Advantage depending on plan) or coinsurance after deductible. Session limits are uncommon on commercial plans; Medicare Advantage plans generally follow Medicare's coverage rules, which don't impose session limits for medically necessary outpatient psychotherapy.
For Medicare Advantage specifically: Humana plans generally cover the same mental-health services Medicare does, often with additional benefits. Outpatient therapy with a licensed mental-health provider is covered. Your copay or coinsurance depends on your specific plan; the Annual Notice of Change document Humana sends each fall details the next year's specifics.
Humana operates primarily HMO and PPO products. HMO plans may require referrals from a primary-care physician for some specialty care, though behavioral-health is often exempt; PPO products generally don't require referrals. Telehealth coverage parity is in place across most Humana plans.
What to verify before your first session: that outpatient mental-health is covered on your specific plan, your copay or coinsurance, and whether your deductible has been met. The Humana member portal is the fastest source. Our intake coordinator can also verify with the therapist's billing team if you prefer.
For out-of-network Humana coverage: PPO plans typically provide partial out-of-network reimbursement (50-70 percent after deductible). HMO and many Medicare Advantage plans have no out-of-network benefits except in emergencies. Confirm out-of-network specifics before assuming you can be reimbursed.
