Oxford is a UnitedHealthcare subsidiary that operates regionally in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut, with strong penetration in the New York City metro area. Many people who hold an Oxford card don't realize Oxford and UHC are functionally one organization — the network is jointly managed, and most therapists in-network with Oxford are also in-network with UHC's broader behavioral-health network through Optum.
Federal parity rules require Oxford to cover outpatient mental-health at terms comparable to medical care. Most Oxford commercial plans cover individual therapy with an in-network provider for a copay (often $20-$40) or coinsurance after deductible. Oxford's plans common in the New York metro tend to have slightly lower copays for behavioral health than many other commercial plans in the area, though specifics vary.
Oxford runs primarily HMO and EPO products. The HMO products require referrals from a primary-care physician for most specialty care, but behavioral-health is an exception in most plans — you can self-refer to a therapist. The EPO products don't require referrals. Telehealth is reimbursed at the same rate as in-person on virtually all Oxford plans.
What to verify before your first session: that outpatient mental-health is covered on your specific plan, your copay or coinsurance, and whether your deductible has been met. The Oxford member portal (or the Optum portal if you've been routed there) has this information. Our intake coordinator can also verify with the therapist's billing team.
Oxford's out-of-network benefits exist on most commercial plans, typically reimbursing 50 to 70 percent of the session fee after an out-of-network deductible. You'd pay the therapist up front and submit a superbill. For Oxford specifically, the in-network path is usually meaningfully cheaper because the network is large in the NY/NJ/CT area.
