4 therapists licensed to practice in New York, available in person or via telehealth.
New York's mental-health landscape is shaped by two distinct realities. New York City has one of the highest per-capita concentrations of mental-health providers in the country, with strong networks of trauma-focused, LGBTQIA+-affirming, BIPOC-affirming, and culturally specific care. Outside the city — upstate, on Long Island, in the Hudson Valley, in the Capital Region — the supply thins meaningfully, and finding an in-network therapist with current openings can take real effort. The matching process tries to account for both situations.
The therapists in this directory who practice in New York are licensed by the State Education Department's Office of the Professions, which issues licenses for psychologists, licensed clinical social workers (LCSWs), licensed master social workers (LMSWs), licensed mental health counselors (LMHCs), licensed marriage and family therapists (LMFTs), and licensed creative arts therapists (LCATs). Each profile lists the license type and number; New York's license registry is publicly searchable for verification.
Insurance in New York is more variable than in many states. Some major carriers — Aetna, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, Optum, Oxford, Oscar — have broad networks across the state. Empire Blue Cross Blue Shield and Fidelis are accepted by some therapists but not as universally. Several therapists in this directory bill out-of-network only and provide a superbill; depending on your specific plan, the math can sometimes work out close to even with in-network. Our intake coordinator can help verify coverage and work through which path makes financial sense.
Telehealth is widely available across New York. Most of the therapists here who offer telehealth are licensed across the state, including upstate. For in-person sessions, the directory currently lists therapists with offices in Brooklyn. If you're located in another part of the state and need in-person, the matching form lets you note that and we'll do our best to match a therapist who can serve you.
Brooklyn-based therapists in the directory cover a wide range of focuses: LGBTQIA+-affirming care, trauma and EMDR work, teen and young-adult therapy, eating-disorder treatment, and substance-use work. Several specialize in BIPOC and immigrant-family experiences.
For mental-health crisis support, call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, 24/7). For immediate physical danger, call 911. NYC also operates NYC Well, a 24/7 crisis service: call 1-888-NYC-WELL or text WELL to 65173.
